I already got one and I don't need another, but if this has the optional low range, then it might show up in my yard.

The quadratrac was a borg warner case with two variants.

The bw1339 came with low range and the bw1305 did not.

did the 1305 have the same chain problems as the 1339? This truck is so funny to me because I did the same thing with my 73 R code Waggy, pulled it out of the woods for $600 and cleaned the heck out of it

A lot of Jeep Wagoneers had rubber mats installed under the carpet, so they are normally good.

They rot out around the the jack compartment in the rear fender wells because it was carpeted and not allowed to drain well. They normally get bad rocker panel rot because large flat sheet metal doesn't fair well with salt being knocked up off the roads onto it.

The only bad place to look out for is around the gas tank, it would leak and rust the frame rail. As long as it doesn't have rust on the frame in that spot, then are solid rigs.

The frames are tough, with the 1977s and upwards having additional strengthening.

They are the same case, one just has a reduction unit that bolts on the back rather than a cover plate.

The chains themselves are massive and strong, but they lose tension over time and this causes debris to get caught between the chain and drive socket if the fluid isn't changed. When something breaks due to neglect, it normally punches a hole straight through the aluminum case.

The Quadratrac is ridiculously simple and easy to work on, but it is maintenance heavy and requires a special kind of limited slip fluid made especially for it in order to function properly.

impressive.

My wife would love to have an old jeep.

She'd probably kill me if i bought a jeep from all the way down there tho...

...or tell me the Montego had to go for us to keep it and that's unacceptable lol

The wood grain or the roof rack?

The roof rack was probably taken off, which means that the headliner is probably gross unless they plugged the holes.

The ones without woodgrain faired a little better against rust.

But the woodgrain is SO COOL. And yeah, I hope they uninstalled the rack properly.

Here is a little buying guide for FSJs.

If you ever get an old Jeep, look for a full size like the Wagoneer, Cherokee, or J-20. There are a couple of years to look out for, don't get one from the 60s as they will have outdated axles and funny Kaiser parts.

Wagoneers, Cherokees, and J-10s have front and rear dana 44s. The J-20s will have a rear Dana 60. The J10s, j20s, and some Cherokees will have wide track axles, while the wagoneer has narrow track axles. The Wagoneers are only about as wide as a yj wrangler and their wheelbase is shorter than a lot of trucks, so they suprising maneuverable, although their towing is a bit mediocre (except for the j20 truck).

If you get a quadratrac vehicle, be sure it has a low range for extra off roadability. The part time cases are all durable and pretty much all have low ranges as far as I know and came with manual tranny Jeeps. The Quadratrac only came with automatics.

1974 and up will have open knuckle axles, which are stronger and have suprisingly tight turning circles.

1977 and up will have additional frame strengthening.

1979 is a one year only, these have springs that sit about an inch higher than other years for some reason.

In 1980 the GM Th400 is replaced by the Mopar A727.

Don't get one from the early 80s, they will have an AMC 20 rear axle, which sucks and a problematic vacuum disconnect front axle.

The late 80s rigs were made by Chrysler and feature the return of the rear d44 and have a good transfer case, although I don't have experience with it like I do with the quadratrac.

The woodgrain is freaking cool and it came with grand wagoneers or wagoneer limiteds, which had all kinds of fancy options like factory cbs and real leather interiors.

I'm debating whether I should repaint my 79 waggy in a single tone paint and add woodgrain.

It is currently a beige on bronze two tone.

I have a 1339 with low range sitting in my garage, left overs from the 79 chief I had that didn't ave low-range. Seeing this thing post reminded me I had it..
